My Background

I began playing drums along to the radio (and KISS, Elton John, and Fleetwood Mac) when I was a kid in the 70′s. Eventually I began writing songs and playing guitar, & keys, too.

In my teens I put together my first home studio where I enthusiastically experimented with recording and production. In 1987, my hobby became a career when I was hired to work for Annex Pro, a high-end music and technology dealer.

Vancouver is a world-famous music and film production city (often called “Hollywood North”). In this environment I provided expert consulting to professional musicians, artists, producers, and engineers from around the world.

In the evenings I began working around town contributing to a variety of independent and major label recordings in every imaginable role: MIDI programmer, technical adviser, songwriter, producer and engineer.

At about the same time (1993) I began accepting offers to teach about music and technology to professionals, hobbyists, media creators, school teachers, and so on. Teaching was something I really began to love doing.

In 2004 I started a small company to provide personalized, one-to-one training. Eventually my lessons made their way online in 2008 in the form of showmeprotools. In 2010 pttuts.com was launched.

When I am not teaching or creating new lessons, I spend my time with my wife and kids and continue to produce music for independent artists and songwriters at my studio in Langley, B.C..

Teaching Philosophy

For me the thrill of teaching boils down to the excitement I felt when I first learned how to use music technology. When the light-bulb switched on and I realized what it meant: the creative potential that these tools put in our hands.

Pro Tools, MIDI, and music technology is incredibly powerful. Learning to create music with it is achievable for anyone who knows what they want to hear and is willing to put in some time and effort to create it.
